How To Be a Good Neighbor in an Apartment Complex

Anybody who’s spent more than two minutes in a large apartment building has probably seen first-hand how crazy they can get. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t be a good neighbor if you live in one. It may be challenging, but it will help you feel better knowing that you’re not the problem. So, if you want to be a better person for those living around you, keep reading our article on how to be a good neighbor in an apartment complex.

Don’t Be Excessively Loud

Our first tip is an obvious one, but don’t be unnecessarily loud when you’re walking in the halls or are in your home. Some apartment buildings are well-insulated, but not all of them are. Yelling at a video game or blasting music won’t go over well with the neighbors. It’s best to be quiet whenever possible, especially when people are likely to be sleeping.

Of course, you can’t be completely silent either. Your footsteps will be a constant source of noise, and it’s going to get loud if you’re blending up a smoothie. Most neighbors will be understanding of these kinds of things. You simply must make sure you’re not excessive about them.

Openly Communicate and Be Social

It’s much easier for a neighbor to get frustrated with you if they don’t know who you are. That’s why it’s good to be friendly with them. That doesn’t mean you have to throw a house party and invite everyone from your floor—just do whatever you’re comfortable with. Simply saying hi and introducing yourself is all you need to do to open a line of communication with those around you.

Once that doorway is open, it will be easier to be friendly in passing or talk openly about things. This is most important when you’re moving in or out of the building. Not upsetting your neighbors during a move can be tricky, but if you’re open with them, it’ll be easier to keep them informed. Additionally, you can do other things to keep them happy.

Avoid Stooping To Their Level

The best tip we can give you on how to be a good neighbor in an apartment complex is to never stoop to their level. Just because you’re trying to be a good neighbor doesn’t mean they will be. You might have some of the nastiest, most uncaring neighbors the world has ever seen—but the second you start being a jerk back to them, you’re no better than they are.

The best thing you can do in a situation like this is keep your distance. Confrontations will still arise, but there’s no reason to make them an everyday occurrence. When one does come up, try to handle it calmly. You don’t have to be overly cheery, but don’t treat your bad neighbors the way they treat you. As long as you learn how to pick your battles, you’ll be fine.
