Fighting Cabin Fever: Ways To Keep Kids Entertained at Home

Every parent knows that kids are curious, rambunctious, and very easily bored. Keeping your kids entertained can be a challenge even in the best of times. When you add social distancing measures or virtual learning to the mix, fighting cabin fever becomes a daunting ordeal. It’s important to let your kids be bored on occasion since it will help them learn how to amuse themselves or simply enjoy a quiet moment once in a while. However, you can also give your kids a helping hand to make sure they’re getting all their energy, excitement, and creativity out during the day. When the house starts to feel stifling this school year, keep these three ways to keep kids entertained at home in mind.

Let Them Help

Kids are natural helpers, especially when they feel they’re doing something important. Chores are also a great way to teach kids responsibility. Working on bigger projects that you can do together—like making dinner, decorating for holidays, or tackling yard work—can make that responsibility more fun for both of you. It also creates the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time together. Just make sure you assign jobs that are age-appropriate and that you can lend a helping hand if they struggle with a task.

Cultivate Creativity

Of all the toys in your house, how many of them encourage creativity? Does your child have access to a sketchbook or paint set? Do they have building toys like Legos or models? What about toys that inspire imagination? The modern household is full of apps and technology that can enrich your child’s life, but some of the best activities are still the ones that require a little input from your kids. Make sure creativity and imagination are a regular part of playtime in your house. Take the time to draw or paint with your kids. Lay down a tarp or old towels to create an art station that allows your kids to get a little messy. The more you encourage these activities, the more likely your kids are to occupy themselves with their creative pursuits.

Escape Outdoors

Sometimes, the only thing you need to combat restlessness is a little fresh air. One of the best ways to keep kids entertained at home is to get out of the house on a regular basis. Of course, this can be a little tricky once the cold weather sets in. However, fall and winter are full of fun activities to do outside. Jump in massive leaf piles, go sledding, or have epic snowball fights in the yard. Just make sure you layer-up properly so that everyone stays warm, safe, and comfortable in the cold weather. Playing outside is a great way to burn energy and have fun, no matter how long you’re stuck at home.
