Have you been watching too many crime shows? From Criminal Minds to CSI and all of the others in between, there are plenty of crime and true crime shows to meet our needs. But, if you’re like a lot of people, as much as you love these shows, you can still head to bed a little jumpy with a bat beneath the bed that night.

So, if you’re one of those people that make up scenarios in your head and you want to ensure that you’re able to defend yourself no matter the circumstance, then read on. We’ve compiled a few of the many common household items you can use in self-defense. It’ll soothe those post-show scenarios!

Blunt Force Items

There are a lot of items around your home that you don’t actually realize are blunt force weapons. Depend on how hard you strike, these could do some major damage. For example, if you’re living with your grandparents or with anyone who uses a walking cane, they can do a lot of damage. And typically, they’re close by.

But if that’s not an option for you, there’s also:

  • Pots and pans
  • Lamps
  • Glass bottles
  • Cans of food
  • An iron

Garden Tools

If you happen to be around your garden tools, these also make for some strong items you can use in self-defense. Anything from your shovel to your rake can make an impact and help keep you safe. If it’s nearby, grab it and see what it can do for you!

Sporting Equipment

These are the common household items you can use in self-defense that most people think about. Think back to that bat that was discussed earlier—that’s a lot of homeowners’ go-to. But there are other items that work as well. Most tuck easily into corners so they’re there whenever you need:

  • Rackets
  • Hockey sticks
  • Bats
  • Golf clubs

Distraction Items

The last category of items we’ll discuss is that of distraction items. These are an option if you’d rather not run the risk of really harming someone else. Instead, these are the options for people who would rather make an escape, than fight (nothing wrong with either option—your safety is the priority!). These are items like:

  • Spices: chili powder, salt, pepper, etc.
  • Blankets and towels
  • Household chemicals

From walking canes to spices, there are plenty of pieces around the home that can protect should your crime dramas come to reality. Stay safe and protect yourself!
